No excuse for abuse
Organization: My Sisters’ Place
Problem: Many individuals suffer from gender-based violence in their relationships.
Reason to believe: Nearly 13,000 Domestic Incident Reports are filed annually with police departments across all communities in Westchester County.
Insight: Victims of Domestic Violence make excuses for abusive behavior.
Big Idea: Challenge the normalization of abusive behavior.
Out of home:
For over 40 years, MSP’s 24/7 Hotline, 1-800-298-7233, has been a lifeline for individuals in crisis. This out of home placement encourages victims of domestic abuse to call the MSP 24-hour hotline to receive confidential assistance.
Signs placed on the payphones remaining in Weschester, NY signal to victims of domestic violence that these phones are opportunities to call for help. Many victims do not feel comfortable calling for help on their own phones, as the call history can be a justification for more abuse. By providing the hotline directly next to the public phone, it encourages victims to take advantage of the situation and talk to a professional in that moment.
